Manitowoc Cranes introduces new Model 16000

One of the stars of CONEXPO 2005 and at the Manitowoc Crane Group stand is the company’s newest crawler crane, the 400 t (440 USt), Model 16000. The crane fills a capacity gap in the Manitowoc product line between the 300 US ton Model 2250 and the 750 US ton Model 18000. This newest Manitowoc is giving crawler-crane customers something exciting to take to work in 2005, said Bruce Buchan, vice president of lattice boom crane sales for North America. “We’re very excited about the new Model 16000 which sets new standards in its capacity class. With proven technology, such as our EPIC controls and the MAX-ER capacity-enhancing attachment, combined with the very latest lifting design from our engineering department, we have created an industry-leading crane,” he said. “Response from our core customers has been very positive and we’re expecting to generate a lot more interest at CONEXPO.”

Standard main boom offered on the crane is 30 m (98 ft) while between 24 m and 84 m (78 ft and 275 ft) of luffing jib can be made available using 6 m (19 ft) and 12 m (39 ft) inserts. The maximum allowable combination of main boom and luffing jib is 132 m (433 ft). Capacity with the luffing jib is 150 t (165 USt). In addition to its excellent lift capacities, the Model 16000 has been designed to be an excellent candidate for windmill installation work. For the Model 16000, Manitowoc designed an optional, detachable upper boom point, with a capacity of 90 t (99 USt) specifically for wind-application projects. Manitowoc’s capacity enhancing MAX-ER technology will also be offered on the machine boosting capacities at normal working radii equating to a lower-per-ton investment than larger cranes that would otherwise be needed. MAX-ER eliminates the time and expense of transporting and setting up a larger crane.

In addition the system retains the crane’s ability to hoist, boom, swing, and travel while carrying any rated load. Drum performance on the new crane is impressive too. It boasts a line pull of 15.8 t (35,000 lbs.) and hoist speeds of up to 212 m/min (697 ft/min) on the main drum. There are auxiliary drums offered as options with line pulls of 15.8 t (35,000 lbs.) and 13.6 t (30,000 lbs.) respectively and corresponding line speeds of 173 m/min (570ft/min) and 127 m/min (417 ft/min). The crane is equipped with 28 mm wire rope on all load hoist drums. Inside the cab of the Model 16000, new EPIC dual LCD color monitors provide easy to read graphic displays. The operator can choose three of eight information modules to be displayed at the same time. That allows data such as radius, boom position and other information to be displayed while the LMI (Load Moment Indicator) screen shows load data.
