Terex Cranes at the Conexpo, Las Vegas

Terex Cranes at the Conexpo, Las Vegas, Stand: North Hall 1009. Terex, the world’s 3rd largest manufacturer of construction equipment will present part of its large product portfolio at the Conexpo show at Las Vegas.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2005 will be the world's largest international gathering place in 2005 for the construction and construction materials industries, showcasing the latest equipment, services and technologies. It will be held from March 15st until March 19th, 2005.

At the joint Terex stand (North Hall 1009, Terex cranes will be showing latest product designs – two Terex-Demag mobile cranes, one Terex-American crawler crane, a rough terrain crane by Terex Waverly, will be representing Terex Cranes’ strength on the US marketplace. The highly successful City Class by Terex-Demag is growing continuously. More than 1200 machines have been delivered since the series was launched in 1996. Their special capabilities enable operators to accomplish difficult mission tasks. The three-axle AC 55 City is one of the new designs that had been introduced at the Bauma 2004. Its lifting capacity is 65 US-tonnes – Demag’s experience with the series and customer feedback have been entered into the machine’s design. The crane disposes of a 40 meter (132 ft) main boom, a newly developed two-man cab and a novel counterweight system that may be supplemented on site.

The Terex-Demag AC 140 – introduced at the Bauma, too – has already become a bestseller in this class. The AC 140’s main boom is 60 meters (197 ft) in length and the max. lifting capacity is 170 US-tons; the machine uses the state-of-the-art technology of its successful larger siblings AC 160-1 and AC 200-1. Using the carrier of the AC 160-1 this crane offers easiest roadability in many US states due to the correct axle spacing and load distribution.

All the new products of course feature the intelligent Demag IC-1 crane control system that comes with a color display and touch screen as well as the UNIMEC telescoping and bolting system for the boom. A computer monitored hydraulic axle control provides improved safety, driving comfort, and agility on the and on soft surfaces.

The HC 165 is the latest development of Terex-American and fills the gap between their strongest crawler HC 275 and the HC 110. With 165 tons max lifting capacity and a very strong boom system the HC 165 is the most powerful crane in its class. As known from the other American products this crane impresses also by its easy transportation and the hydraulic counterweight removal system. 3 machines will be on display from Terex Cranes’ Waverly operations.

The boom truck RS70100 with its 70,000 lbs (31.7t) lifting capacity and a max. tip height of 140’ (42.7m) is an impressive vehicle. It’s Terex’ largest boom truck and shows the possibilities such a crane type can offer to fulfill customer needs. In addition to that 2 cranes with a max. lifting capacity of 75 US-tons are on display too. Those are the RT 775 with 134’ (40.8m) max tip height and the truck crane T775 with 133’ (40.5m) max tip height. Both cranes offer best cost/performance ratio and are very popular.

Sarens expands in Asia

Belgian lifting giant Sarens has entered into a joint venture with Australian crane rental company Trans-Lift in Australia. The new venture, Sarens Trans-Lift, will offer contracting, crane hire, and special transport. Sarens has operations in about 20 countries around the world. 'The Australian market looks to have a lot of potential with regards to the ongoing and coming investments in the windmill industry,' sales and marketing manager Hendrik Sarens told Cranes Today. Australian power plants and petrochemical plants are investing to bring their operational units to higher emissions standards, he said.

Big cranes included in the venture include the 800t Liebherr LTM1800 AT, 600t Terex-Demag CC2800 crawler, and 250t Hitachi Sumitomo SCX2500 crawler. Trans-Lift Pty started operations in November 2003, when it purchased a 550t Liebherr LG1550 lattice-boom truck crane from Brambles Industrial Services. ''As Trans-Lift Pty Ltd rapidly expanded in became obvious that there was room for a heavy lift and transport company in Australia to go head to head with Lampson,' Sarens Trans-Lift director Jack Leverington told Cranes Today. 'An overall view of the heavy lift industry in Australia shows a shortage of experienced big crane operators, heavy lift supervisors.

One of the attractions to Sarens was their preparedness to bring experienced people to Australia to train our engineers, supervisors, operator and riggers / dogmen on all aspects of heavy lift,' he said. 'At the moment the Australian mining, infrastructure and construction industries are busy and by having access to cranes like the Sarens CC8800 gives us some clout on large projects.' Hendrik Sarens said that the company has joint ownership because 'it is important to keep a homeland presence in the company.'

Also, Sarens has renamed and reorganised its Thailand-based business, which recently won a large contract by Samsung at a Petroleum Authority of Thailand site. Following Sarens' purchase of a majority of shares, the company, formerly known as SES Sarens Equipment Services is now called Sarens Asia. Sarens has provided the company with a 850t Gottwald AK680 lattice-boom truck crane, 300t Terex-Demag CC2000 crawler and 140t Liebherr LTM1140 AT as well as additional crane operators and support staff. Jungmu Suh is general manager, Anthony Banfield is technical-commercial manager and Eric van Mulders is financial controller.

Sarens has also set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Venezuela. The branch, intended to serve only the country, makes the second Sarens presence in South America, after the company's affiliation with Tecmaco Integral in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The fleet consists of relatively small telescopic-boom wheeled mobiles.

Mammoet builds new PTC

Early next year marine engineering firm Huisman-Itrec will finish building the third Mammoet heavy-lift platform twin ring crane that is containerised (PTC). The 1,600t capacity PTC will be the seventh ring crane in Mammoet's fleet and and one of the worldís largest mobile cranes. The company's two existing PTC machines are each rated at 1,600t capacity.

The first PTC entered service in 1999 (in Van Seumeren's colours, before Van Seumeren acquired Mammoet and took the latter's name) and the second started work in 2001. With a maximum load moment of 33,705tm, these cranes can lift 602t at a radius of 50m, and 96t out at 107m radius. Crane sections are transported in standard 20ft or 40ft curtain-wall containers, with a maximum weight of 30.4t. The crane is mainly designed for the erection of columns, for example in operational plants offering only restricted space to rig and operate the crane as well as for longer construction projects and quick movements of heavy loads.

The PTC's rigid and sturdy ring construction allows the crane to be moved quickly to a new location within a day on its own optional crawler tracks. It also features a Superlift configuration that allows it to lift heavier loads with a given counterweight. Standard load bearing is 28t/m2 at maximum capacity. The crane's engines and safety systems are duplicated in case of failure. Hydraulic cylinders can level the ring. It took about 80 containers to transport one of the older units to Corinth, Greece, to the Motoroil Hellas 2005 Expansion project. The crane, which took 12 days to erect with 85.3m main mast, lifted two reactors with weights of 850t and 750t.
