Grove GSK 55: Trailer mounted mobile crane

Manitowoc again introduces a new innovative mobile crane concept named GSK 55. The upperstructure already is known from its AT-version, the GMK 3055, fitted with 43 meters of telescopic boom and a double folding jib with 8,7 and 15 meters of lenght as option. The special idea about the GSK 55 is its carrier, as it is a specially designed 3-axle trailer-chassis. For moving the crane this chassis can be combined with a common prime mover that usually is available in every truckfleet.

The GSK 55 offers the same load capacities and working radius like the GMK 3055, though it has not its mobility offside the road. But the great benefit of this concept is the road mobility between different job sites. Combined with a 2-axle truck and full ballast of 11,6 tonnes, the GSK 55 has a maximum load per axle of 9 tonnes. The trailer chassis is fitted with 93kW-motor from Iveco. With this motor all crane functions are driven, including the outrigger system. At coming Intermat in Paris Grove will show the GSK 55 in iron for the first time.

New production facilities for Manitowoc in Wilhelmshaven

Manitowoc has opened two new halls for the production of the GTK 1100 and superstructures of GMK All Terrain cranes in Wilhelmshaven. The testing and storing area at the same time was increased with a further 12000 square meters. Also a new customer area was opened for the handover of the cranes to the customers.

Freo Cranes get Grove Cranes

Freo Cranes from Australia took delivery of the first crane from a big order made at Manitowoc Crane Group. The order covers three models from the Grove crane range: the GMK 4080-1, the GMK 5130-1 and the GMK 5220, which was the first to be delivered now.

Manitowoc builts new Model 14000

According to Cranes Today, Manitowoc is working on the successor of the 4100W. The new 220 US tons crawler crane can be equiped with a maximum main boom length of 86 m / 282ft and 113,8 m / 373 ft of luffing jib. The 14000 is powered by a Cummins engine, type QSL 8.9L, with 340 hp / 253 kW. The main drum has a maximum line pull of 140 kN. Manitowoc will start the deliveries of the 14000 in the beginning of 2007.

Model 16000 available with MAX-ER

The Manitowoc Model 16000, a 400t (440 USt) crawler crane is now available with the lift-enhancing MAX-ER attachment. The 16000, launched at CONEXPO in 2005, is often used for wind power equipment erection, as well as petrochemical and fabrication yard applications. The MAX-ER attachment can provide up to 232 t (256 USt) of counterweight, which increases the crane’s capacity at radius, says Al Kadow, Manitowoc Crane Group’s product marketing manager for lattice-boom cranes.

The standard boom length is 96 m (315 ft) on the 16000. With the MAX-ER, boom length can be increased to 120 m (394 ft). With the addition of a luffing jib, there is an even more dramatic increase. Typically, the 16000 can handle a 54 m (177 ft) boom with a 84 m (275 ft) jib, for a total reach of 138 m (452 ft). But with the MAX-ER, the crane can support a 90 m (295 ft) boom and a 84 m (275 ft) luffing jib, a total of 174 m (570 ft) of reach.

For the first time on a Manitowoc crane, this MAX-ER is equipped with a hydraulically driven stinger. According to Kadow, this allows the operator in the cab to hydraulically adjust the position of the MAX-ER behind the crane. The mechanical stinger required manual adjustment.

GTK1100 - The new crane concept from Manitowoc Crane Group

GTK1100 from Grove is a totally new concept for lifting from the Manitowoc Crane Group. The main applications will be the erection of wind turbines and lifting in high areas. The biggest advantages in comparison to regular lifting cranes is the easy transporting of the components and the quick assembly. Beside of grove, making the main development, all parts of MCG like Manitowoc and Potain were involved in the construction. A kind of semitrailer carrying a vertical telescoping tower with a maximum height of 81 m, topped with a luffing telescopic boom, will reach a maximum overall height of 140 m. All components can be transported on 4 trailers. Accoring to preliminary numbers, the GTK1100, based on 4 cross based outriggers, will lift 70 to to a height of more than 120 m.

Manitowoc and Kobelco extend alliance to Europe

The OEM agreement that sees Manitowoc selling Kobelco lattice boom crawler cranes in its own colours is being extended to Europe, the two companies announced during the Conexpo show in Las Vegas. As in the Americas region, Kobelco will supply Manitowoc with cranes up to 100t (110 US ton) capacity. Manitowoc will add Kobelco’s 55t, 80t, 90t and 100t capacity models to its product offering in Europe from July. Kobelco will continue to sell in competition with Manitowoc in Europe, just as it does in the Americas.

Last year Kobelco was the crawler crane market leader in Europe, taking more than a third of all sales. A particularly strong seller was the the 80t class CKE 800. Manitowoc Crane Group president Glen Tellock said: “Manitowoc Crane Group is very excited about our expanding relationship with Kobelco Cranes. The fact is that both companies have a similar outlook on customers, products, and service. These similarities have allowed us together to find ways to better serve our customers.” Kobelco Cranes president Takashi Ishida said: “We recently held a launching ceremony for Kobelco branded all-terrain cranes for the Japanese market, supplied by Manitowoc [Grove]. Our customers are showing good response to the newly introduced models. I truly believe that Manitowoc is the best alliance partner in the industry.”

Manitowoc Cranes introduces new Model 16000

One of the stars of CONEXPO 2005 and at the Manitowoc Crane Group stand is the company’s newest crawler crane, the 400 t (440 USt), Model 16000. The crane fills a capacity gap in the Manitowoc product line between the 300 US ton Model 2250 and the 750 US ton Model 18000. This newest Manitowoc is giving crawler-crane customers something exciting to take to work in 2005, said Bruce Buchan, vice president of lattice boom crane sales for North America. “We’re very excited about the new Model 16000 which sets new standards in its capacity class. With proven technology, such as our EPIC controls and the MAX-ER capacity-enhancing attachment, combined with the very latest lifting design from our engineering department, we have created an industry-leading crane,” he said. “Response from our core customers has been very positive and we’re expecting to generate a lot more interest at CONEXPO.”

Standard main boom offered on the crane is 30 m (98 ft) while between 24 m and 84 m (78 ft and 275 ft) of luffing jib can be made available using 6 m (19 ft) and 12 m (39 ft) inserts. The maximum allowable combination of main boom and luffing jib is 132 m (433 ft). Capacity with the luffing jib is 150 t (165 USt). In addition to its excellent lift capacities, the Model 16000 has been designed to be an excellent candidate for windmill installation work. For the Model 16000, Manitowoc designed an optional, detachable upper boom point, with a capacity of 90 t (99 USt) specifically for wind-application projects. Manitowoc’s capacity enhancing MAX-ER technology will also be offered on the machine boosting capacities at normal working radii equating to a lower-per-ton investment than larger cranes that would otherwise be needed. MAX-ER eliminates the time and expense of transporting and setting up a larger crane.

In addition the system retains the crane’s ability to hoist, boom, swing, and travel while carrying any rated load. Drum performance on the new crane is impressive too. It boasts a line pull of 15.8 t (35,000 lbs.) and hoist speeds of up to 212 m/min (697 ft/min) on the main drum. There are auxiliary drums offered as options with line pulls of 15.8 t (35,000 lbs.) and 13.6 t (30,000 lbs.) respectively and corresponding line speeds of 173 m/min (570ft/min) and 127 m/min (417 ft/min). The crane is equipped with 28 mm wire rope on all load hoist drums. Inside the cab of the Model 16000, new EPIC dual LCD color monitors provide easy to read graphic displays. The operator can choose three of eight information modules to be displayed at the same time. That allows data such as radius, boom position and other information to be displayed while the LMI (Load Moment Indicator) screen shows load data.
